The Legacy Letter Challenge: Define Your Legacy Beyond Finances
By Bryan Trugman, CFP®
As financial advisors, clients tell us they want to leave a legacy, but they’re usually talking about money. The real legacy is being able to share moments and experiences with the people you love and care about.
The Importance of Legacy
The people you love want and need your guidance, influence, and connection. They want to hear from you, in your own words, all the values, visions, hopes, and dreams you have for them. For those reasons, legacy goes far beyond the transfer of financial wealth. It’s also a rich conveyance of beliefs, culture, and values that can direct your family’s course for generations.
Expressing the depths of that love and those wishes isn’t always easy, but it does make a lasting impression in the lives of your children, family members, and those you love. By writing a Legacy Letter, you can create a powerful impact on your loved ones. They can look toward your voice to focus them on their path and guide their steps in moments of uncertainty.
You don’t need to be near the end of life for your loved ones to treasure a heartfelt Legacy Letter written in your own words. It’s meant to deepen the relationships you currently have so you can live in the joy of those thriving connections now.
Discover Our New Program for Attitude Financial Clients
You don’t have to be a professional letter writer to compose a Legacy Letter that people important to you will cherish for a lifetime. It’s about communicating to your loved ones in your voice for lasting impact. We’re partnering with Blake Brewer to help you develop a Legacy Letter you can be proud to gift. His unique process segments the writing technique into three key sections:
- Preparing your heart and mind
- Crafting your thoughts into a letter
- Gifting your letter
With the Legacy Letter writing method, you can communicate everything your loved ones want and need to hear from you and make it overwhelmingly clear why you’re proud of them.
Firsthand Experience
Long-time clients of ours know my dad, Jeff, as one of the founders of Attitude Financial Advisors. He recently wrote a letter to me and my siblings. He had this to share about the Legacy Letter Challenge experience:
We are a very close family, so we do speak to and see each other often. We’re also good at connecting emotionally and expressing ourselves…I think in writing, putting something down on paper, you’re sending a message to your family, to your friends, that they’ll always have something from you.
If you have something tangible, in writing, it’s kind of like you’re always there with them. It could be a source of comfort, a source of inspiration.
Life is full of challenges and heartaches for all of us. And when you have a foundation of support, the people you know, that get you, that have your back, there’s nothing you can’t deal with…. I found the process of writing the letter very rewarding.
My dad’s letter is something I’ll cherish and value for the rest of my life. That’s why I’m thrilled to share the Legacy Letter Challenge with my clients next month.
